Effective October 1, 2009, the New York Medicaid Inspector General will begin posting on its web site the names of providers who bill Medicaid for services provided to deceased patients. Penalties also include fining such providers and requiring them to repay the Medicaid program. Enforcement has been made easier because the Office of Medicaid Inspector General now receives death information from the state within a few weeks, instead of the sixmonth waiting period to receive such information from the Social Security Administration.
