The European Commission’s Energy Using Products (EUP) Directive, due to come into force by the end of this year, will encourage manufacturers of energy using products such as office computers (with emphasis on standby mode) through to household boilers to design more energy efficient products. A Working Paper from 2009–2011 selected product types for which preparatory studies would be undertaken in the relevant industry. At the turn of 2011, recommendations for implementing measures have begun to be issued to the EU Commission for consideration for adoption into Regulation. It is anticipated that the draft regulations will be voted on by the Regulatory Committee this autumn and subsequently become legislation.
