The European Commission has published the closing remarks made by Charlie McCreevy (European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services) at the Unicredit Group Workshop on financial inclusion and education in the EU.
Commissioner McCreevy states that despite the positive action taken by national authorities and financial services providers, there is still considerable effort to be made across the EU to ensure access to basic banking services for all.
In February 2009, the Commission launched a public consultation to gather views and ideas on how to ensure that everyone has access to a basic bank account. The consultation paper explains the current situation and presents various policy solutions to address financial exclusion.
Commissioner McCreevy then discusses financial education which is another way to support migrant’s social and economic integration.
