MEPs have voted in favour of the revised Agency Workers Directive. This means that agency workers will be entitled to the same treatment as permanent workers from day one except (as in the UK) where there is an agreement in place between trade unions and employers’ organisations in the relevant Member State. In the UK the CBI and the TUC have agreed that the principle of equal treatment should apply only after the first 12 weeks of an assignment. Legislation in the UK is expected to come into force in 2010 at the earliest.
