By a Decree of 18 January 2013 (published in Gazzetta Ufficiale no. 80 of 5 April 2013), the Ministry of Health created two new authorities which should improve food safety and consumer protection.

The National Centre for Emerging Risk in in the field of Food and Feed Safety (Centro di Referenza Nazionale per i Rischi Emergenti in Sicurezza Alimentare) was created to ensure that all necessary precautionary measures be taken to identify and assess emerging risks in food and feed safety. Those measures should include a more effective exchange of information and data and a close cooperation with other organisations operating in the field of food and feed safety.

The other new authority is the National Centre for Biological Investigations on Anabolic Steroids in Food of Animal Origin (Centro di Referenza Nazionale per le Indagini Biologiche sugli Anabolizzanti Animali), which was established with the purpose of developing new methods of analysis and diagnosis of illegal substances in meat.
