Ravshan Sabirov, former Social Protection Minister in Kyrgyzstan, has been convicted of corruption by a Kyrgyz court and will serve a five year jail term in a maximum-security prison. Also convicted was his former deputy Takhir Mirzakhmedov who received a three year sentence.

Sabirov and Mirzakhmedov accepted bribes in return for facilitating the adoptions of Kyrgyz children by foreign nationals. Sabirov was arrested in July 2012 and was initially acquitted following a November trial, but the court's decision was appealed by the Prosecutor-General's office.
