The Local Authorities Co-ordinators of Regulatory Services (LACORS) has published a guide for students and young people looking for rented accommodation. The aim is to protect such people from exploitation by unscrupulous landlords and letting agents. Among other recommendations the guide advises them to ask to see up to date certificates for gas and electricity. According to LACORS 14 people in the UK died last year from carbon monoxide poisoning. The prospective renters are also told to insist upon a written tenancy agreement. The LACORS press release says it has sent copies of the guide to councils in England and Wales. Copies can also be downloaded from its website.
