Mining giant Grupo Mexico paid a $2 billion judgment in cash to Southern Copper Corp. on October 9th, after a seven year legal battle with Southern Copper's minority shareholders. The shareholders, who sued on behalf of Southern Copper, will only receive 20%, or about $400 million, of the fee because Grupo Mexico owns 80% of Southern Copper. Grupo Mexico will also pay $315 million to cover shareholders' legal fees, one of the largest fee amounts ever awarded in a securities class action suit. Legal Fees.
