Effective on March 18, 2013, the federal regulations governing parental consent to access public benefits or insurance (e.g., Medicaid) will change in a way that simplifies how school districts access public benefits and insurance. The final regulations require that school districts obtain a one-time written consent from parents (as opposed to every time access to public benefits/insurance is sought). The regulations further require that school districts provide written notification to parents before accessing public benefits/insurance for the first time and annually thereafter. Additional information concerning the final regulations can be located on the U.S. Department of Education’s website here.
