Changes to the Medicines Act 1981 were passed on 22 November 2013. Among other things, the changes extend the definition of "authorised prescribers" to include nurse practitioners and optometrists and enables them to prescribe all medicines appropriate to their scope of practice. The changes also include a new ability for the Minster of Health to authorise particular classes of registered health professionals to be "delegated prescribers". Delegated prescribers will be able to prescribe within limited parameters, under the direction of an authorised prescriber and in accordance with a delegated prescriber order.
