The Commission’s initiative consists in exempting certain investment aids for ports and airports from prior scrutiny under State aid rules, and in extending the General Block Exemption Regulation (the GBER). The provisions on which the public is invited to comment aim to ensure that aids are not granted only for transport investments. Moreover, they should not exceed what is necessary to realize the investment. The Commission’s goal is to facilitate the use of the GBER, as well as to facilitate the provision by the Member States of compensations to companies in order to cover their additional costs when they operate in the outermost regions of the Union. The public consultation will be open until 30 May and will probably be followed by a second public consultation before the final decision.
