A new law passed by the California Legislature during the 2007 session amends current California law governing gift cards to require a merchant or retailer who issues a gift card in California to provide cash back to the purchaser or holder (the “holder”) for any gift card with a cash value (i.e., balance) of less than $10.00. The new law takes effect on January 1, 2008.
