The commissioner for the internal market, Michel Barnier, recently outlined the steps he is proposing to take in legislation scheduled for this November, dealing with flaws in the audit market. He noted that several stakeholders lacked confidence in the independence of auditors, and that auditors are too closely tied to the companies they audit. One of his proposed solutions was the compulsory rotation of auditors after a certain period of time. He highlighted his concerns over non-audit services, suggesting that these should be limited or forbidden. He also expressed concern over the size of the audit market, and stated that the solutions being considered by the Commission include mandatory joint audits; mandatory rotation and re-tendering; and a review of “unacceptable” Big Four only clauses.
