Mining Waste Regulations Parliament yesterday debated the EPP Regulations on the implementation of the MWD. Despite strong opposition from the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, the Regulations (in the format annexed to the consultation paper published in May) were voted through and will come into force on 7 July.

According to a member of the CBI Minerals Committee who attended the debate, the shadow environment minister, Ann Macintosh emphasised the view of the minerals industry as to a flawed consultation, gold plating and over regulation. She also raised the issues of the possible impact of the revisions to landfill tax and the redefinitions of inert waste, which, as we mentioned at last week's seminar, may well impact upon the cost and availability of inert waste for quarry restoration.
