The government’s appeal to the Supreme Court began this week against the High Court’s decision last month which held that triggering Article 50 required Parliamentary approval. The government is arguing that it can start the Article 50 process using "prerogative powers". The case has since been further complicated by a statement from Scotland’s Lord Advocate that the Scottish Parliament's consent is needed before the UK triggers Article 50 and lawyers for Northern Ireland, who have said that triggering Brexit could have a profound effect on the Good Friday peace agreement. The case continues and a decision is not expected until January next year.
