Last weekend the Re-Use of Public Sector Information Regulations (RPSIRs) came into force requiring public sector bodies (such as the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO)) to make information that they produce as part of their "public task" available for re-use (unless it is restricted or excluded).

This puts UK law in line with the European Directive and mirrors the Government's commitment to open data.

The ICO has commented that it welcomes this new role and it will "increase accountability and create new opportunities for public sector information to be combined into new information products".
