Motorola Inc. demonstrated its ambitions for a world of seamless mobility by proposing to acquire Symbol Technologies. Motorola, currently active in the wireless and broadband technology sector, will acquire Symbol’s business specializing in the production of mobile computers for use in extreme environments. The European Commission approved the merger on the basis that, despite Symbol’s position on the market for data capture and scanning devices, the horizontal overlaps between the activities of Motorola and the product categories of the Symbol business it is set to acquire are limited and the combined firm would continue to face stiff competition in the marketplace.
