After much activity in previous years, 2007 was a relatively quiet year for family friendly rights. In April 2007 the SMP period was extended from 26 to 39 weeks and the right to request flexible working arrangements was extended to employees with adult dependants. Extending the right to parents of all children (rather than just those under six) would have a much bigger impact. This is recognised by the Government, which has launched a review to consider this possibility.
The other significant change in the pipeline is making the second six months of maternity leave transferable to the mother's partner. This is now unlikely to happen until 2010.
