The Government has issued a consultation on the European Commission's proposals to amend the Pregnant Workers Directive (92/85). Many of the changes would not affect the situation in the UK, as most maternity rights here are already equivalent to or provide more than the EC minimums. The key proposal that could have the most effect in the UK however is the proposed introduction of a right to full pay during maternity leave. Member States would be able to introduce a cap but this would be limited to at least the level of sick pay.
