The drawn out progress of the draft EU Data Protection Regulation continues. After attracting much industry criticism as a result of its prescriptive approach and a record 3,000 proposed amendments from European Members of Parliament, the draft Regulation’s next appearance before the European Parliament had been delayed until October. However, the recent furore regarding internet surveillance by intelligence agencies has led to a call by the Justice Commissioner, Viviane Reding for the Regulation to be implemented as soon as April 2014. Plainly some serious work will be required in Brussels if this date is to be achieved.
