On February 19, American Express was found liable by a federal judge for violating U.S. antitrust laws over how it imposes restrictions upon its merchants. American Express had, until this decision, barred its “merchants from asking customers to use one card over another,” the Associated Press reports. Mastercard and Visa had similar practices but stopped them several years ago when facing threats of litigation. American Express did not and pushed forward to litigation. American Express lost.
