Eliminating health care fraud is a top priority for the Obama administration in its efforts to combat rising costs and to safeguard the Medicare Trust Fund. One new initiative takes aim at health care fraud, and providers should be aware of its existence. A new joint task force of senior officials from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has been created. It is called the "Health Care Fraud Prevention and Enforcement Action Team" or "HEAT." HEAT is aimed at both the prosecution and prevention of health care fraud. On the prosecution front, new "Strike Force" teams will be created in Detroit and Houston, and HEAT will be assisting state-level Medicaid officials with audits. With respect to prevention, new training programs and resources will be offered to providers, and new efforts are being undertaken to improve data and information sharing between HHS and DOJ.
