AttorneyGeneral Chris Finlayson has announced that the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Pike River mine tragedy will be given an extra two months to deliver its final report and policy recommendations to the GovernorGeneral.

The extension changes the Royal Commission's reportback date to 30 November 2012, rather than 28 September 2012. The delay has been necessary, in part, as resources have been diverted to respond to a judicial review application involving the Royal Commission. The reportback date was previously extended from the initial deadline of 31 March 2012.

The costs associated with the extension of the Royal Commission's reporting date will be funded from within its existing appropriations.
