The United Nations’ Stolen Asset Recovery team recently reported that it has returned £19 million to Tunisia, which it recovered from ex-President Zine el Abidine Ben Ali (Ben Ali). Ben Ali fled Tunisia in January 2011 following the Arab Spring protests which ended his 23-year rule.

The money had reportedly been held in a Lebanese bank account belonging to Ben Ali’s wife Laila Trabelsi who fled to Saudi Arabia with Ben Ali after the uprisings. The funds were recovered following Tunisia’s mutual legal assistance request to Lebanon.
