Competition Commissioner Almunia warns that the Commission “will take all necessary steps to ensure Member States comply with their recovery obligations, and that they comply faster…”. In 2010, Member States recovered a total of €530m in illegal State aid, bringing the total aid recovered in the last decade to €10.9bn. The speed at which the illegal aid is recovered has also increased, from just 26.9 per cent in 2007 either recovered or taken to court within two years to 57 per cent last year as the Commission toughens its procedures. Going forward, businesses will find that recovery will be monitored more strictly and the Commission will be quicker to take infringement proceedings to force Member States to act.
