The Belgium Wine and Spirits Federation has complained to the European Commission (Commission) about the availability of glass bottles and jars on the market. It is alleged that there has been a dramatic hike in prices (between 5 per cent and 30 per cent) for empty glass bottles and jars resulting from the considerable concentration in the number of manufacturers in the EU. The principal allegations concern the activities by the three largest manufacturers of bottles, Saint Gobain of France, Owens-Illinois of the US and Ardagh glass of Ireland. The Commission’s spokesperson has confirmed that it is currently examining the complaint.
