Neelie Kroes spoke at the "Sky Talks" Conference about new banking models and regulations likely to emerge following the crisis. In terms of competition policy she emphasised that banks who were well run must not be unfairly disadvantaged compared to those who need state bail-outs. She also stated it is likely banks will become smaller and more focused on core businesses like lending. Looking beyond competition she anticipated that a single approach to key elements of banking regulation is likely to emerge over the coming months.
