The Northeast Waste Management Officials’ Association (NEWMOA), with the assistance of an EPA grant, has published a white paper to promote the recycling of gypsum wallboard from construction and demolition projects in the northeastern United States.

The paper identifies improvement strategies for gypsum waste recycling that would (i) prohibit gypsum wallboard waste disposal in landfills, (ii) require state-financed projects to recycle their gypsum wallboard waste, (iii) require waste management planning by construction industry contractors so they are better prepared to properly manage and recycle such waste, (iv) develop common terminology and reporting requirements among state environmental agencies to help wallboard and other similar waste processors and recyclers conduct business more easily in neighboring states, and (v) develop and implement extended producer responsibility approaches to engage the manufacturers and other stakeholders in promoting increased recycling of such waste.
