The government has transferred the responsibility of managing and updating the TPS (telephone preference service) and FPS (Fax preference service) to the ICO. The responsibility was originally Ofcom's.

The government believe that “this measure will enable complaints arising from nuisance calls and faxes to be dealt with more quickly".

The TPS and FPS are databases which log the details of individuals who do not wish to be contacted by marketing agencies through telephone and fax.

This transfer follows the government's continued focus on tackling nuisance marketing, which in November saw the government announce that company directors could be held personally liable for breaches of nuisance marketing rules.
