EPA has announced the availability of its latest guidance estimating cancer risk from low-dose exposures to ionizing radiation. 76 Fed. Reg. 31,329 (5/31/11). Titled “EPA Radiogenic Cancer Risk Models in Projections for the U.S. Population,” known as the “Blue Book,” the guidance replaces a report issued in 1994. Estimating that radiation exposure is 35 percent more likely to cause cancer than previously projected, the new guidance calculates risk estimates based on models recommended by an EPA-commissioned National Academy of Sciences panel.
