On 25 January, President Nicolas Sarkozy announced the intention to build the country’s first offshore wind power facilities. The project requires total investment of approximately €10bn and bidders have been alerted. The initial plans are for five 3,000 MW offshore windfarms with 600 wind turbines in total. This project should be completed by 2015, following which plans for another 600 wind turbines are anticipated shortly afterwards. The French government is working towards the creation of 25,000 MW of wind power by 2020.
