Despite the arguable moratorium on drilling offshore Alaska, Shell Offshore Inc. this week filed an application with BOEM to begin exploratory drilling in Alaska's Beaufort Sea in 2011. According to the Los Angeles Times, the company did not provide an exploration plan different from its plan for the Chukchi Sea, but it "scaled back its original drilling schedule and put into place new oil spill containment equipment." The company's plan to drill in the Chukchi Sea are still on hold pending ongoing litigation.
