The Minamata Convention, a United Nations Environment Programme treaty to curb industrial mercury use, was signed by 110 nations in Japan on October 10. Should at least 50 of the signatories ratify the convention, it will enter into force. Brazil, China, Germany, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, and the European Union are some of the signers.
