The HSE have released provisional statistics for the number of fatal injuries for the year ending 31 March 2012. The statistics indicate that two fewer workers – 173 – were fatally injured at work compared to the year ending to March 2011. The rate of deaths per 100,000 remained unchanged at 0.6. The statistics appear to show that in the past four years there has been a levelling off of the previous downward trend of fatal injuries. However, when compared to the average number of fatal injuries over the last five year period (196), the 2011/2012 figure represents a drop of 12%.
