The National Audit Office (NAO) has recently completed a report on financial management at the Department for International Development. A key finding is that foreign aid payments are to be targeted more towards countries affected by war or with fragile infrastructures. In light of the increasing value of aid packages to high corruption risk states, the NAO has called on those responsible for government foreign aid to be more proactive in their efforts to avoid corrupt use of the funds.

The NAO report concluded that the risk of corrupt and fraudulent use of aid money will increase in proportion with the increasing value of aid packages to such high risk countries. As a result, the NAO has recommended that more work is required in the anticipation and investigation of fraud.
