Surprisingly, the DEP’s well-promoted Stewardship Program has not captured many heavily regulated facilities. This Stewardship Program is supposed to be a means to publically acknowledge those entities that “go beyond the minimum regulations” and many industrial operations pride themselves on doing just that.

When the program kicked off, we were advised that the DEP would complete checklists during enforcement inspections to identify the programs at a facility that qualify for Environmental Stewardship recognition. In practice, we found that the DEP infrequently uses the checklist during its inspections. Nonetheless, the DEP has published checklists it did complete on its website. If you have gone “green” and want some acknowledgement of your efforts on the DEP website, you may want to review the Stewardship Program checklist now. The DEP website address is stewardship/.
