On June 20, 2011, the Board of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the organization responsible for setting policy for the rules, structure and stability of the Internet, passed a resolution to offer to governments, businesses, and non-profit organizations the ability to operate a generic top-level domain (gTLD).
