Yesterday, Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Kathleen Sebelius announced that nearly $162 million in grant awards for health information exchanges (HIEs) will be distributed to 16 states or state-designated entities. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act appropriated $2 billion in discretionary funds to the Office of the National Coordinator and created a number of grant programs to encourage the adoption and use of HIT. In February, Sebelius announced the first round of HIE awards totaling nearly $386 million. The news release, which includes the awardees and grant amounts for the second and final round of HIE grants, may be found at the following address: http://www.hhs.gov/news/press/2010pres/03/20100315a.html.
