Currently, a tax deduction is available for the purchase costs of patent rights or rights to know-how. Recently a bill was introduced to the Legislative Council proposing to provide a tax deduction for the purchase costs of other types of intellectual property, namely copyrights, registered designs and registered trademarks. Antiavoidance measures are included in the proposed legislation to combat any abuse. The bill is subject to the debate and approval of the Legislative Council before it can be enacted into law. A Bills Committee was formed on April 8, 2011 to study the bill.
