When Theresa May was Prime Minister, the Government announced that they were proposing to bring forward a new Mental Health Act.

The Queen’s Speech on 10th May 2022 (historically read out by Prince Charles on behalf of Her Majesty) confirmed that the Government was still intending to amend the Act and that the coming session of Parliament would include publication of draft legislation to amend the Mental Health Act. No further detail was given in the Speech.

However, the Speech also referred to the introduction of a new Bill of Rights, and commentators have referred to this repealing the Human Rights Act. Depending upon the content of this new Bill, that may also have an impact on mental health issues and practice.
