Mark Hoban spoke on regulatory reform, with specific emphasis on its effects on the pensions sector. He spoke about UK regulatory reform and then focused on the problems the proposal for a Regulation on OTC Derivatives, Central Counterparties and Trade Reporting (EMIR) could bring for pension funds. He explained how the UK will continue to lobby for an exemption from the clearing obligations for pension funds until there is a technical solution to the difficulties it would cause. He also commented that the MiFID Review should not simply carry requirements that have worked in equity markets over to bond and derivative markets. Finally he said the UK was working hard with EIOPA to ensure an appropriate standard of European supervision of the insurance and pensions sector.
