On 19 March 2014, the Government's Cabinet Office made an announcement about the new EU public procurement directives. These directives have been proposed to replace Directive 2004/17 (Utilities Directive) and Directive 2004/18 (Public Sector Directive). There is also to be a separate proposed directive on the award of concession contracts.

All three directives are to be published in the Official Journal of the EU on 28 March 2014, and they are to come into force on 17 April 2014. EU member states will have two years to implement the directives in their national legislation.

The directives were approved by the European Parliament on 15 January 2014, and by the EU Council on 11 February 2014.
