After the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding between Taiwan and Japan on a cooperative program for mutual recognition of the deposit of microorganisms for patent applications, the Japanese nationals filing patent applications with the Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (TIPO) and Taiwanese applicants filing applications with the Japan Patent Office (JPO) will only need to make a single deposit of their microorganisms at a convenient designated depository in their respective home countries, rather than to  make repeated deposits in both countries. In addition, the biological materials of patent applications filed with TIPO that have been deposited in a designated international depository in Japan can be furnished upon request by any party. The exact date for implementation of this cooperative program is to be determined by TIPO and JPO and separately published after the two offices complete relevant negotiations.
