On 6 April, the right to request flexible working was extended to parents of all children aged 16 and under. The government estimates that as a result of this extension an additional 4.5 million parents and carers will benefit from the right. It should be remembered that this right is not a right to work flexibly, but only to make a request, which employers can turn down on specified grounds. Government statistics show, however, that employers agree to 95% of requests that are made.
