In the latest of a series of investigations into the conduct of abuses in the electricity sector, the European Commission launched an investigation into the behaviour of CEZ, the principal Czech electricity provider. The formal inquiry follows inspections at the premises of CEZ and other companies in November 2009. The Commission confirmed on 15 July 2011, that at the centre of the investigation is whether CEZ has prevented entry into the wholesale electricity market by the “hoarding of capacity in the transmission network”. The formal inquiry is still at an early stage and CEZ is yet to have an opportunity to fully respond to the allegations.
