The initial draft decision was presented by the Commission at the end of February 2016. The Article 29 Working Party has then released its opinion thereon and the Member States representatives (Article 31 Committee) have approved the final version of the EU-US Privacy Shield last Friday.
Today, the European Commission has completed the last step for the Privacy Shield to be finally adopted.
The EU-US Privacy Shield, like the former Safe Harbour framework which it intends to replace, is based on a self-certification mechanism by which U.S. companies commit to a set of privacy principles issued by the U.S. Government of Commerce.
At the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield press point, Commissioner Jourová's declared: “the Commission will continue to work closely together with the United States in monitoring and supporting the successful implementation of this new framework.”
