On 20 December 2013, the UK Ministry for Justice published a special bulletin on claims management in the payment protection insurance (PPI) sector. The bulletin highlights areas where claims management companies (CMCs) are failing to comply with relevant rules and provides guidance and advice to prevent such failings. On 18 December 2013, the Financial Services (Banking Reform) Act 2013 was passed in the UK. This amended UK legislation to allow for large fines to be imposed on CMCs providing poor quality services or using information acquired by cold calling. A consultation period inviting submissions on proposed amendments to the Conduct of Authorised Persons rules for CMCs in the UK closed on 9 January 2014. A summary response paper is expected in February 2014.
