The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a conditional commitment to provide a partial guarantee for a $1.4-billion loan to install solar panels on industrial buildings across the country, an endeavor the agency claims is the “largest rooftop project in U.S. history.” The project, known as “Project Amp,” includes the installation of approximately 733 megawatts (MW) of photovoltaic solar panels—nearly the total amount of such panels installed in the United States in 2010.

According to the agency, the $1.4-billion loan guarantee will be used to facilitate about $2.6 billion in financing for solar rooftop installations. The project is expected to produce up to 1 million megawatt hours of electricity.
