Governor Rendell signed legislation that brings municipal hiring and promotion practices into compliance with federal and state law.

The bills, HBs 1516 & 1517, will bring certain civil service laws into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act. Over time, there have been court decisions which have found that some provisions regarding hiring and promotion in municipal law violates the provisions of federal and state anti-discrimination laws, according to a statement from State Rep. Bob Freeman, D-Northampton, the sponsor of the bills. This package of bills brings these laws back into conformity with those laws and decisions.
