On January 7, 2009, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced the five consolidated Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) that will process and pay Medicare claims for 14 states from the Midwest and South. The new MACs replace the current two-tier Medicare processing system of: 1) fiscal intermediaries that process claims for Medicare Part A providers; and 2) carriers that process claims for Part B providers. CMS chose the MACs based on a technical and past performance evaluation, a cost realism analysis and overall cost reasonableness. CMS believes these new contracts will help the Medicare program save money and provide better service to healthcare providers. The new MACs will immediately begin their implementation activities and will assume full responsibility for the claims processing work in their respective jurisdictions no later than March 2010.
